Yes, they are waterproof!
For our technical garments, we use the Sympatex membrane. In this video, you will find an explanation of how it works.
SYMPATEX MEMBRANE MECHANISM
It’s a "full" membrane and does not have "holes" (pores). You can imagine it as a plastic film (somewhat like food wrap) sandwiched between two fabrics. The outer fabric is water-repellent, while the inner fabric is moisture-absorbing to facilitate moisture absorption and transfer to the outside through a pressure differential.
Breathability is ensured by the membrane’s thinness and internal structure. The membrane is waterproof up to 20,000 Schmerber, meaning it can withstand high water pressure from the outside. All seams are sealed with heat-activated tape inside the jacket.
