Important Information Regarding the Water Repellency of Products

While the Sympatex membrane is designed to make the garment waterproof, a water-repellent treatment is also applied. The purpose of this treatment is not to physically block water like the membrane does but to delay or even prevent water from penetrating the outer fabric of Sympatex's 3-layer technology. The Sympatex membrane is sandwiched between two protective fabric layers. The PFC-free water repellent gives the outer layer (the one you see when wearing the jacket) the ability to repel water, causing it to bead up and roll off rather than being absorbed, which would otherwise make the jacket heavier and less comfortable for the user.

As a result, a product can be:

Water-repellent but not waterproof Water-repellent and waterproof At Lagoped, we use a water repellent that does not contain fluorinated compounds (PFCs), which are endocrine disruptors. This water repellent is technically referred to as C0, where C stands for carbon, and 0 indicates the number of carbon molecules in the product. The traditional water repellent was C8, an environmental hazard, and legal standards now require brands to gradually transition to C0, which is cleaner and healthier for both nature and humans. However, this does not completely prevent water from penetrating the outer fabric because, at Lagoped, it is the membrane that stops the water.

Difference between the EVE and TETRAS jackets

The EVE and TETRAS jackets have the same technical features regarding waterproofing, windproofing, and breathability: they both use the same Sympatex membrane.

There is a difference in price and weight. Beyond that, the differences lie in the size of the zippers (3mm on the TETRAS and 5mm on the EVE) and the placement/number of pockets (the EVE has an interior mesh pocket and an inner pocket, while the TETRAS has different pocket placements), as well as the location of the ventilation openings (under the arms for the TETRAS jacket and on the sides for the EVE jacket).

The TETRAS jacket is more suited for hiking, mainly because it has deep handwarmer pockets, unlike the EVE jacket, which has two chest pockets (Napoleon pockets) and is better suited for ski touring.

However, you can use either model in winter.

The choice ultimately comes down to pocket layout, the very different color options between the models, and the price.

The fabric of the EVE jacket is much more flexible than Gore-Tex and doesn’t have that crinkly effect. The outer fabric of the EVE jacket is a twill, which is softer than the canvas of the TETRAS jacket. But in both cases, it's much less crinkly than Gore-Tex, which is one of the reasons why the guides we outfit enjoy working with our jackets.

How to maintain Water Repellency

On the outer fabric of technical clothing, a chemical product is applied to ensure a certain level of "water repellency": water beads up on the outer fabric and its penetration into the fabric is delayed.

At Lagoped, we use a water repellent that does not contain fluorinated compounds (PFCs), which are endocrine disruptors. This water repellent does not completely stop water from penetrating the outer fabric, as at Lagoped, it is the membrane that blocks the water.

Due to our refusal to use PFCs in our water repellents, the outer fabric of our jackets will get wet when exposed to more than just a few raindrops. To maintain the water repellency of your jacket or pants, you can use the PFC-free water repellent:

It is even advisable to do this when the fabric gets too wet in the rain.

We recommend applying the water repellent to your garment while it is still damp (but wrung out) after washing. Hang it on a hanger and use the spray from a distance of 15 cm. This way, you can see exactly where you are applying the water repellent. Then, let it air dry. Once the garment is dry, you can put it in the tumble dryer for about fifteen minutes to better fix the water repellent through a polymerization effect.
